A healthy smile starts with an exam

Maintaining your optimal oral health is more than just treating dental problems as they occur. The first step toward healthy teeth is a comprehensive dental exam, which is more thorough and detailed than a routine checkup. Our team at Lake Oak Dental will conduct a full examination of your teeth, gums, soft tissue, bite, and joints. That will allow us to determine your needs and to evaluate and plan for your long-term oral health care. Our goal is to make sure you enjoy a healthy smile for years to come!

What is a comprehensive dental exam?

A comprehensive dental exam is an essential component of preventive dentistry which is the practice of preventing oral disease and caring for your teeth to keep them healthy. Your exam is usually conducted during your initial visit to our practice and aims to provide a baseline that we use to lay the groundwork for any future recommendations and treatment plans. We examine every aspect of your oral health to determine any treatments or preventative measures you need.

Before examining your teeth, we will ask you about your medical and dental history, any current or previous complaints, and any cosmetic goals. Our thorough exam includes various components aimed at ensuring that we cover all aspects of your oral health.

What is included in the oral exam?

Digital X-Rays
There are many conditions and potential problems in areas that we can’t see during our comprehensive dental exam. A full set of x-rays will help us identify and diagnose any areas of concern. We will be able to detect tooth decay, bone loss, cysts, or any other abnormalities. X-rays provide a wealth of information that we use to design preventive or restorative treatments.

Periodontal Exam
During the periodontal exam, we will examine the condition of your gum and determine if any disease is present. The early stages of gum disease (periodontal disease) are reversible, so identifying any problems early on will help us offer you treatment options aimed at maintaining your gum health. If left untreated, periodontal disease may result in tooth loss, along with a host of other oral and health conditions. Early treatment will save you many complex procedures down the road, along with the expenses associated with them.

Tooth By Tooth Exam
The tooth by tooth examination is an essential component of your comprehensive dental exam. We will examine each one of your teeth for chips or cracks that may potentially cause pain. We will check existing fillings or restorations, and will analyze the condition of your tooth enamel and determine whether your teeth are at risk of developing cavities. This exam will help us identify any need for preventive or restorative treatments to keep your teeth strong and healthy.

Aesthetic Evaluation
We will evaluate your smile and will consider any cosmetic dentistry services you may need including restoring missing teeth, teeth whitening, correcting crooked or misaligned teeth, and more. You don’t need to settle for anything less than a perfect, white smile!

Bite Analysis
We will perform a bite analysis to determine the health of your occlusion (bite). A bad bite may result in conditions such as loose teeth, excessive tooth wear, or a painful condition known as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. Correcting your occlusion will help treat these conditions and alleviate any symptoms associated with them, along with lowering your risk of developing potential problems.

Oral Cancer Screening
An oral cancer screening is a quick and painless exam that can save your life. When detected and treated in the early stages, there is a 90% chance for a cure. During our screening, we will examine the tissue in your mouth and ensure that you are healthy and cancer-free. Early detection is the key to experiencing a fortunate outcome.

What is a Comprehensive Treatment Plan?

Once we conclude your examination, we will create an individualized plan for you. Your plan will include immediate needs, preventive measures, and any cosmetic procedures you may want to consider. Our primary goal with this treatment plan is prevention. We aim to prevent any dental problems from developing and to treat any existing ones before they progress.

Comprehensive Dental Care

Caring for your teeth extends beyond the walls of our dental office. Maintaining meticulous oral hygiene plays a significant role in promoting your dental health through preventing the onset of problems such as cavities and gum disease.

At home oral care involves flossing your teeth and brushing them daily using fluoride toothpaste, and regular rinsing using an antiseptic mouthwash. Make sure to consume a healthy, balanced diet to ensure your teeth are getting the nutrients they need to stay healthy. Avoid sugary foods, carbonated drinks, and tobacco products to lessen your risk of cavities and gum disease.

In addition to caring for your teeth at home, make sure to keep up with your routine checkups and dental cleanings. Together we can work to ensure that you keep your teeth healthy for a lifetime.
